  • Foundation of the Hasso Plattner Institutes for Design ( at Stanford University


  • Start of the project HPI School of Design Thinking (HPI D-School) with 40 students from 30 different universities


  • The HPI School of Design Thinking introduces itself at CeBIT
  • HPI is being awarded "Selected Location" for the third time by the initiative "Germany - Land of Ideas
  • July: At a festive opening ceremony, the first class of D-School students presents the results of their 12-week projects that have been conducted together with external partners. The project partners were: Grundy UFA, betterplace Foundation, Immobilienscout 24 and Bundesagentur für Arbeit, BAUM e.V. (Bundesdeutscher Arbeitskreis für Umweltbewusstes Management), Lernmobil and Special Olympics Berlin, Deutsche Messe, Siemens Building Technologies and Vattenfall Europe, Bundesdruckerei and T-Mobile Creation Center Berlin


  • Foundation of the HPI Academy that offers Design Thinking workshops for professionals


  • The HPI School of Design Thinking triplicates its capacity to 120 student places per semester and now offers the Basic Track and the Advanced Track


  • The HPI School of Design Thinking supports the establishment of a Design Thinking center at the Communication University of China in Beijing.
  • Support with the establishment of the innovation center Genovasi in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • September: HPI School of Design Thinking celebrates its fifth anniversary with the first d.confestival


  • November: The HPI School of Design Thinking starts a cooperation with Openlab in Stockholm, Sweden. Openlab is a research and educational collaboration, where students and researchers at Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Södertörn University will take on challenges that the City of Stockholm, Stockholm County Council and the County Administrative Board are facing.


  • The study “Parts Without a Whole? – The Current State of Design Thinking Practice in Organizations”, proves the successful application of Design Thinking in organizations


  • A third innovation school opens in South Africa: The Hasso Plattner Institute of Design Thinking at the University of Cape Town (d-school)
