We look forward to an insightful talk and discussion on “Creativity in Philosophy” with Prof. Dr. Michael Beaney, Professor of History of Analytic Philosophy am Institut für Philosophie der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, und Professor of Philosophy am King’s College London, und Dr. Julia von Thienen, Design Thinking Researcher at Hasso Plattner Institute.
Creative’ is not a word that is frequently used - at least in analytic circles - in describing the work of philosophers and logicians. In this talk Prof. Dr. Michael Beaney wants to illustrate how philosophy and logic are indeed creative at their deepest levels by taking five case studies: Meno’s paradox, Cantor’s ‘discovery’ of transfinite numbers, Frege’s construal of concepts as functions, Russell’s use of interpretive analysis in the theory of descriptions, and Kant’s Copernican revolution.
After Professor Beaneys talk, all participants have the opportunity to take part in a discussion round moderated by Dr. Julia von Thienen, Design Thinking Researcher at Hasso Plattner Institute. The discussion round will begin with reflections on common patterns in the creative processes of philosophers, logicians and design thinkers; then the discussion will be open to all questions.
About Prof. Dr. Michael Beaney:
Professor Michael Beaney’s post at King’s College London is held jointly with a half-time position as Professor of History of Analytic Philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Before taking up these jobs he was Reader (2005–09) and then Professor of Philosophy (2009–15) at the University of York. Professor Beaney has also worked at the Open University (2000–05), University of Manchester (1998–99), University of Leeds (1992–98), Birkbeck College, London (1990–92) and University of Sheffield (1986–88).
He has held Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowships in Germany at the University of Jena (2006–07) and University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (1999–2000), and was Visiting Professor at Beijing Normal University in 2013 and 2014 and Peking University in 2011.
