HPI at the Potsdam Science Day

Intro

Research. Discover. Participate.

Under this year’s motto, thousands of visitors interested in science gathered on the Golm campus on May 9, 2026, to gain insights into the work of research institutions across the state of Brandenburg. For the first time, the Hasso Plattner Institute also participated with its own booth at the 13th Potsdam Science Day, using the opportunity to introduce the institute and engage with the broader public.

Through interactive experiments by the HPI d-school and the Chair of Algorithm Engineering, the Hasso Plattner Institute provided hands-on insights into computer science and digital learning. In addition, staff members from Open HPI, the institute’s digital learning platform, presented programs such as the Student Academy (Schülerkolleg), summer camps, and further opportunities for exploring computer science and study options.

At the HPI booth, visitors could actively participate in various interactive activities. Building towers out of spaghetti, tape, and marshmallows challenged creativity and teamwork, while mathematical tasks using a card set invited participants to test their problem-solving skills. The Open HPI duck was also hidden across the campus and playfully guided many visitors to the HPI booth. They engaged in conversations with HPI staff and took the opportunity to learn more about computer science and HPI’s educational offerings in a hands-on way.

Overall, more than 40 universities, schools, and research institutions from Brandenburg presented their work and offered insights into current research and teaching.
