Designing for Good: Reflections on the GDTA Conference

Looking back: GDTA Annual Conference 2025

How the global Design Thinking community came together in Turkey to explore transformation, responsibility, and shared futures.

On September 18–19, 2025, the Global Design Thinking Alliance (GDTA) gathered its international community at Yaşar University in Izmir, Turkey. As a central meeting point for educators, practitioners, and leaders, the annual GDTA Conference offers a space to exchange insights on the evolving practice of Design Thinking worldwide. This year’s edition brought together transformation experts, educators, and innovators from across the globe to address pressing questions of leadership, culture, and societal impact.

“Design for Good” at the heart of the agenda

Under the guiding theme “Design for Good,” the conference explored how Design Thinking can contribute to positive societal change in times of multiple crises. Panels and workshops examined the role of communities in defining “good,” emphasizing that good intentions alone are not enough. Discussions ranged from designing responsible technologies to shaping cultures of transformation, always returning to the central question: how can design foster meaningful, sustainable change?

HPI d-school contributions

The HPI d-school team actively shaped these conversations. In the panel “Design for Transformation,” co-head Monika Frech discussed with international transformation leaders what it takes for organizations to change at a deeper level beyond structures toward mindsets and culture. Her key message: “True transformation doesn’t happen by accident – it requires courage, intentionality, and design.”

On the second day, María-José Juarez Rodriguez, Paola Hintze, and Monika Frech led a hands-on workshop on “Design for Good,” using case studies on communication during natural disasters. Participants explored opportunities and limits of well-intentioned design, shared best and worst practices, and reflected on the responsibilities of designers and stakeholders.

Outlook

The conference highlighted that Design Thinking is not an end in itself but a way to turn uncertainty into opportunity. A forthcoming conference book and blueprint will capture the insights of Izmir 2025, paving the way for future editions. With India set to host the next GDTA Conference in 2026, the global community continues its journey of designing for transformation – and for good.
