Shaping the future: empathy, creativity, and technology

Intro

In a world where artificial intelligence creates everything from art to legal briefs, the question of how humans and technology connect has never been more urgent. Recently, the World Economic Forum highlighted that emotional intelligence, creativity, and leadership will be among the top skills needed by 2025 – precisely because technology is advancing so rapidly (World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2023). This rising demand for human-centered competencies reminds us: As technology becomes more powerful, it is up to us to shape how it serves real human needs.

Driving responsible tech innovation

At the HPI d-school, we believe that navigating the future of technology requires more than technical excellence – it demands vision, empathy, and collaboration. That is why we are particularly excited about the Tech Leadership Conference on July 17–18, 2025. Under the theme “Navigating the Future: AI-Driven Transformation and Emerging IT Trends,” we bring together global tech leaders, CIOs, CTOs, and innovators to explore how we can responsibly drive technological change. With world-class talks, co-creation sessions, and unique networking opportunities, this conference is designed to foster the kind of dialogue and action that is urgently needed today. We invite you to be part of this conversation – and to help shape a future where technology truly serves people.

Empowering students and leaders to shape a human-centered future

In this newsletter edition in April 2025, we explore how the intersection between humans and technology can inspire true innovation across all areas of learning and leadership. Samuel Tschepe, Team Lead Design Thinking Programs, shares in an exclusive interview why AI should be seen not as a replacement, but as a co-creator that helps us think bigger, iterate faster, and reflect more consciously. Through this lens, we highlight how the human-technology intersection becomes a powerful catalyst for creative collaboration.

For students, we feature a project that bridges the gap between SMEs and AI talent. Using Design Thinking, our teams developed tangible solutions for real-world challenges – showing how human-centered approaches can make emerging technologies truly accessible and impactful. Applications for the next Global Design Thinking Workshop are now open, offering students the opportunity to dive deeper into solving real-world problems with empathy and creativity.

In Professional Development, we invite experienced leaders and curious minds to explore the future of AI and human-centered innovation through our workshops and the monthly AI & Design Thinking Community Café. Whether you seek a compact learning experience or want to connect with other pioneers in AI-driven transformation, our programs empower you to lead change with purpose.

Across all areas, the HPI d-school remains committed to one central idea: designing technology that serves people first – and in doing so, unlocking the true potential of innovation.
