Paper accepted at TMA conference

Internet shutdowns and infrastructure failures have recently reached new heights, yet our ability to monitor them remains fragmented and inconsistent.

Katrin Vollhardt and Florian Künzig will present our latest paper, "Stitching the Internet’s Blind Spots: Unifying Outage Datasets for Visualization and Cross-Validation," at the TMA conference taking place June 29 – July 2, 2026 in Delft, NL. This paper introduces a methodology to merge three of the most significant outage datasets: Analysis of Network Traffic Outages (ANT), Cloudflare Radar Outage Center (CROC), and Internet Outage Detection and Analysis (IODA). By integrating these sources into the Internet Yellow Pages (IYP) knowledge graph, we showcase a transition towards topology-aware analysis of network disruptions.

The image 👆🏻 illustrates our analysis of the July 2024 Bangladesh shutdown: The Bangladesh country node (brown) is located at the center. Cyan nodes represent the four major mobile operators and the five largest ISPs. The surrounding clusters of purple (ANT), orange (CROC), and red (IODA) dots represent individual outage events detected by different systems. The yellow “Outage” nodes indicate the merged, cross-validated result, showing disruptions lasted 5–8 days longer than initially reported.

We are releasing our code and IYP schema to help the community better quantify network disruptions. The paper was an outcome of a master’s project (cc: Christian Kaiser, Maximilian Paß, Sofya Generalova, Simon-Michael Nowack).
