Inaugural lecture

Cooperation, mutual support and appreciation. These are important values for our professor. You can sense that when you hear him speak.
Last week, he gave his inaugural lecture at HPI on the topic of “Building Data-Intensive Foundations of a Modern Internet.”
💡 In addition to providing insights into his research, he gave students many valuable tips for their own academic careers.

Since the beginning of 2024, Prof. Bajpai has headed the “Data-Intensive Internet Computing” department at the joint Digital Engineering Faculty of the University of Potsdam and the Hasso Plattner Institute.

His research is dedicated to the major challenges facing the internet, such as: How do we combat disinformation and hate speech? How can scalability and performance be achieved in the ever-growing Internet? How can we close the digital divide for people without Internet access, who still make up 30 % of the population?

With his department at HPI, he wants to get to the bottom of how effectively the Internet can master the challenges ahead.

His path to HPI took him across the globe. He started in Lucknow, India, and went on to New Delhi, Bangalore, Bremen, Munich and Hanover, with research visits to San Diego and New York.

✨ Prof. Bajpai's doctoral thesis led, among other things, to an update of an IETF standard that was later implemented and used by Apple in the Safari browser!

💬 His message to the students in attendance: Seize opportunities and just try things out – that's the only way to find out what really interests you.
And: The best research still comes from working together.

He concluded with a clear call for collaboration to the professors in attendance and outlined points of contact for joint projects.
