Tech Leadership Conference 2025

The conference

Shaping leadership for Europe's digital future

On July 17 and 18, 2025, the Tech Leadership Conference transformed the campus of the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam into a lively place for dialogue, reflection, and shared learning. Together with the HPI, we were able to organize and hold the conference with the aim of bringing together people from different generations, disciplines, and sectors to work together on Europe's technological future.

Prof. Dr. Falk Uebernickel summed up why this is urgently needed in his opening speech: “The challenges we face today are not only technological – they affect the way we lead together.” And: “What we are experiencing right now is not just technological progress, but a call to take responsibility and actively shape our future.”

The conference provided the space for this. Flavia Bleuel and Dr. Friederike Hoffman moderated high-caliber keynotes, in-depth panel discussions, and special formats that gave young voices visibility.

Formats, topics, and voices

The Tech Leadership Conference 2025 focused on depth of content and genuine participation. In addition to keynotes and talks, including those by Dr. Julia Reuss (Meta), Daniel J. Beutel (Flower Labs), Hans Koenigsmann (former VP SpaceX) and international guests from research and industry, the focus was on town hall talks. These panels brought together thought leaders and invited the audience to actively participate.

For example, the panel “European Tech Sovereignty? Why We Need to Regain Our Confidence“ with representatives from ARIC Hamburg, Aleph Alpha, TU Hamburg, and Ivoclar discussed the value of European values in a global technology world. One of the central messages was: ”It is time to stop seeing ethics as a controlling authority at the end of the process and start seeing it as a formative force in the innovation process.”

The role of humans and AI was also up for debate. In the panel “Human and AI: Partner or Puppet?”, it became clear that there is more at stake than automation. It is about partnership – and about preserving humanity in technology: “AI magnifies both our strengths and our prejudices.”

The talk “Creating Business Value with AI” focused on specific applications and challenges in implementing AI in companies. One clear finding: “85 % of pilots fail” – but where AI is integrated sensibly, real added value is created.

A highlight of the conference were the Spotlight Talks – short, concise presentations by leading tech leaders from companies such as Google Deepmind, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Airbus prepared and moderated by students. Here, young talents showed how they get to the heart of current topics in technology, ethics, and society – and what questions they are asking today's leaders.

The fireside chat rounded off the first day of the conference. In conversation with Prof. Dr. Ralf Herbrich, former SpaceX Vice President Hans Koenigsmann gave honest insights into the early years of the space company. You can listen to the entire fireside chat in the live podcast.

Content, insights, and outlook on Europe's technological responsibility

This year's conference clearly showed that Europe's strength lies in the diversity of its voices and its value-based approach to technology. However, to leverage this strength, new forms of collaboration are needed – between research and practice, between regulation and innovation, between established players and new perspectives.

Key questions were deliberately left open: How can we use ethics as a driver of innovation? How can sovereign technologies be developed in Europe? And how can we shape education so that people of every generation can take on technological responsibility?

We have summarized the most important insights and made them available on our website:

Thank you and outlook for 2026

As HPI d-school, we look back with pride on two days full of inspiration, honest discussions, and bold ideas. And we are already looking ahead: The Tech Leadership Conference will return for its next edition on July 23 and 24, 2026. We will take the open questions, voices, and ideas from this year with us and use them to shape the next chapter for a sovereign, sustainable Europe.
