The HPI Alumni Network is coming together in the UK: on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, we warmly invite all HPI alumni in the region to a reunion in central London.
Join us for an inspiring evening in order to reconnect, exchange and explore how the HPI alumni community in the UK can grow in the future.
The event will open with a talk by Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Georg Kaissis from the Hasso Plattner Institute entitled "The Accidental AI Researcher".
Following the talk, there will be ample time for discussion and networking. Together, we will explore whether there is interest in establishing a more regular HPI alumni format or chapter in the UK.
Talk – "The Accidental AI Researcher"
What happens when a radiologist becomes obsessed with the question of whether medical AI can be both powerful and trustworthy? In this talk, I describe my path from clinical medicine through machine learning to research at the intersection of privacy, safety, and healthcare AI — including stops at TUM, Imperial College, and Google DeepMind before joining HPI. I discuss how working with real patients shaped my approach to building AI systems that respect privacy, ensure fairness, and remain interpretable. I hope to show that the most interesting problems often live at disciplinary boundaries, and that not having a traditional CS background can be as much a feature as a bug.
More about Prof. Georg Kaissis
Georg Kaissis is the Chair for Digital Health and Human-Centred Transformative AI (HTAIL) at HPI. A board-certified radiologist, he previously served as a Senior Research Scientist at Google DeepMind in London and led the Privacy-preserving and Trustworthy Machine Learning group at the Technical University of Munich. His research focuses on the technical and normative aspects of reliable artificial intelligence in medicine, with a particular emphasis on differential privacy, safety, and fairness.
