HPI Alumni Day

Alumni Day 2025: Where Innovation Meets Experience

November 20, Potsdam

In the dynamic world of computer science, the most valuable innovations arise where knowledge and experience converge, and visionary research finds its practical application. At our institute, this is our mission: to strengthen Europe's digital sovereignty. Our students and alumni are the most important ambassadors of this vision. They shape the digital future, acting as catalysts for mutual inspiration and cooperation between research, education, and the economy—in Germany, Europe, and worldwide.

This event is exclusively open to HPI alumni, students and staff members.

A Day of Inspiration and Networking

The true strength of our alumni network lies in its diversity. With over 2,000 alumni who are startup founders, corporate managers, and renowned researchers, they represent the entire spectrum of the IT industry and are active in numerous countries around the globe. This diversity allows us to unite a wide range of perspectives and develop groundbreaking solutions. We warmly invite students, alumni, and staff to immerse themselves in the variety of our network at the HPI Alumni Day—a network that has emerged directly from the research and teaching of our institute.

  1. Keynotes & Insights: Experience firsthand how our alumni drive digital transformation in their fields. Gain insights into current industry and research trends and projects from alumni who are leading digital transformation.
  2. Workshops & Networking: Connect with peers for professional and academic collaboration. Interactive sessions will explore how scientific breakthroughs are applied in practice.
  3. Get-together: The day will conclude with a mixer, providing a relaxed setting for further networking, for personal conversations and new friendships.

Generations in Dialogue

With 2,000 alumni and counting, we are especially looking forward to the exchange between students, graduates as well as experienced professionals and academics. Young alumni enrich the discussions with fresh perspectives and the latest technological trends, while experienced members share strategic foresight and proven practices. These encounters create a unique learning culture from which all participants benefit.

    Founder and CTO, Vara

Stefan Bunk is the founder of Vara, a leading healthcare company transforming early breast cancer detection through artificial intelligence. After graduating from the Hasso Plattner Institute in 2017 with a specialization in applied machine learning, software engineering, and healthcare IT, Stefan joined Merantix for a year before founding Vara in 2018.

Under Stefan's leadership, Vara has become an integral part of Germany's mammography screening program, supporting over 40% of all screenings and providing high-quality screening to over 1 million women annually. The company conducted the groundbreaking PRAIM study, published in Nature Medicine, which represents the largest prospective study on the real-world effectiveness of AI in healthcare to date, involving half a million participants.

Using Vara's technology, the PRAIM study demonstrated significant improvements in cancer detection rates and reductions in false-positive rates, leading to earlier diagnoses and fewer unnecessary procedures. This research showcases the transformative potential of AI to enhance breast cancer screening outcomes while reducing patient anxiety and healthcare costs. Stefan's work at Vara reflects his dedication to creating practical solutions to critical healthcare challenges, bridging the gap between cutting-edge AI research and real-world medical applications that directly improve patient care.
