Alumnus Prof. Dr. Matthias Weidlich starts at HPI

Many processes in our everyday lives are far more complex than they appear. In healthcare, logistics, scientific workflows, and business administration, countless steps interact to keep the world around us running. Prof. Dr. Matthias Weidlich makes these processes analyzable in real time.

With his appointment, the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) is expanding its research in data-driven information systems. Since April 1, 2026, Prof. Weidlich has been heading the new research group "Data Systems" at the joint Digital Engineering Faculty of HPI and the University of Potsdam.

Together with his research group, Prof. Weidlich builds on his previous work, focusing on the algorithmic foundations and infrastructures for the data-driven analysis of complex systems. These include treatment processes in hospitals, global trade flows and supply chains, as well as standardized methods for analyzing scientific experiments.

A return to his academic roots

For Prof. Weidlich, the Hasso Plattner Institute is not entirely new territory. Around 15 years ago, in 2011, he completed his PhD here—and is now returning. Most recently, he was a professor at the Institute of Computer Science at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he has held the chair of Databases and Information Systems since 2018.

"Two decades ago, the stimulating environment at HPI drew me into research on processes and data. Returning to the institute, I hope to encourage students to drive innovations in data-centric process analysis and data stream processing, and to translate their ideas into impactful systems and applications," says Prof. Weidlich.
