Project Case

Lübben. Playful. Explore.

Intro

Lübben attracts many spontaneous visitors, but many are not familiar with the leisure activities on offer and lack clear orientation in the town. A A team from the HPI d-school developed a playful solution for exploring the city. The result: a digital scavenger hunt that interactively guides visitors and locals through Lübben. With personalized tours and a coupon system, the city can be experienced in a new way.

Challenge

How can the experience in Lübben be made more attractive for spontaneous visitors and locals? A team of students from the HPI d-school tackled this question and developed a concept that picks up on the trend of “digital natives” from cities looking for short adventures in the countryside.

Starting point

The town of Lübben in the Spreewald is an established tourist center with a well-developed infrastructure and steadily growing tourism. Until now, the region's nature and leisure activities have mainly attracted families and older, quality-conscious travelers. In order to further develop as a leading location for leisure and recreation in Brandenburg, Lübben would like to attract more “digital natives” from metropolitan regions such as Berlin.  How can the town adapt its tourism offering to reach these guests and residents in the long term in order to establish Lübben as a modern, sustainable recreation destination?

To get to the bottom of this question, the d-school team explored the town of Lübben on their own to familiarize themselves with the leisure activities on offer. Over the course of several visits, the students conducted interviews with guests, town residents and retailers.

Aha-moments

During the Design Thinking process, it quickly became clear that there was room for improvement: Lübben is a popular destination for day trips, but many travelers come spontaneously and are barely informed about what the town has to offer. There is a lack of a user-friendly digital portal with an overview of activities, and the inadequate signposting in the town was also criticized.

Based on these findings, the team developed various ideas that were tested directly on site with the target group. In the end, the team decided on a prototype of a digital scavenger hunt in the form of an app that makes it possible to experience Lübben in a playful way - for guests and locals alike.

Impact

The concept for the app “Lübben. Playful. Explore” app offers tailor-made tours for different target groups, including families with children and active vacationers. It uses the town's existing infrastructure and is linked to a coupon system that motivates visitors to discover the local retail and leisure facilities.
