Project Case

Promoting integration in the workplace

Intro

How can companies better master intercultural integration? The Integration Compass is a digital, interactive platform where companies can find guidance for dealing with the practicalities of everyday life with apprentices who have fled their home countries. A platform that offers orientation and provides companies with targeted support for integration.

Challenge

How can companies better integrate refugees and sustainably anchor intercultural understanding in the company?

Starting point

Many companies face challenges when it comes to integrating trainees with a refugee background. Support is provided by NETZWERK Unternehmen integrieren Flüchtlinge, an initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK e.V.). More than 4,4350 companies, mainly small and medium-sized enterprises, are already committed to integrating refugees into the labor market.

The student team from the HPI d-school was tasked with further developing the existing approach of the integration scouts and finding new ways to sustainably anchor intercultural understanding in companies.

Aha-moments

The analysis of the integration process quickly showed that there are already many offers – but they are often confusing and difficult to access. Companies often do not know what support options exist.

The team further developed the idea of integration scouts. This is how the Integrationskompass (integration compass) came about – a digital platform that presents existing integration offers in a structured way and helps companies find the right measures.

During development, the team conducted interviews with refugees, companies and representatives of the network to ensure that the Integration Compass meets the actual needs of users. Companies and trainees with a refugee background were also repeatedly involved during prototyping.

The result: an intuitive website that offers companies targeted ideas, concepts and best practices for successful integration in the workplace – a valuable guide for company owners, HR managers and employees.

Impact

The project provided an important impetus. This was so sustainable that the NETZWERK Unternehmen integrieren Flüchtlinge (Network for integrating refugees) hired two students from the team to continue work on the platform.

Together, they finalized the Integration Compass and put the platform online. Today, it provides companies with long-term support in effectively and sustainably shaping intercultural integration in the workplace.
