Beschreibung

Das WWW ist groß, ziemlich groß sogar. Im Juli 2008 vermeldete das GoogleBlog, dass Googles Web-Crawler eine Billion URLs erfasst hätte. Aber wie soll man in dieser Datenflut noch die gewünschte Information finden?

Information Retrieval Techniken stoßen beim Verstehen natürlichsprachlicher und multimedialer Dokumente schnell an ihre Grenzen. Eine Folge davon ist, dass Informationen vielfach redundant angelent werden müssen und echte Interoperabilität nicht öglich scheint.

Das Semantic Web bietet mit Hilfe formaler interoperabler Metadaten einen Ausweg aus diesem Dilemma. Dabei wird die Bedeutung der jeweils im WWW repräsentierten Informationen mit Hilfe aufeinander aufbauender Wissensrepräsentationstechniken formalisiert. Die Bedeutung der Information wird damit nicht nur maschinenlesbar, sondern maschinenverstehbar. Neue Fakten können aus bestehenden Informationen gewonnen und automatisch von einer Vielzahl neuer Anwendungen verarbeitet werden.
