Press Release

New HPI professorship for data-intensive Internet computing

Starting January 2024, Prof. Vaibhav Bajpai will head the "Data-Intensive Internet Computing" department at HPI.

In his research, Prof. Bajpai advances aspects of digital infrastructure, network protocols and architectures, emerging cyber-physical systems and digital sovereignty. The basis for this are responsive and resilient networked systems - with high capacity, low latency and end-to-end security and privacy. The focus of Prof. Bajpai's work has a direct impact on the design and operation of Internet technology. For example, his doctoral thesis led to an update of an IETF standard that was later implemented and used by Apple in the Safari browser. He is also committed to using the Internet in a way that takes social challenges - such as sustainability issues - into account.

Prof. Bajpai on his plans at the joint Digital Engineering Faculty of the University of Potsdam and HPI: " I very much look forward to cooperating with the excellent scientific fabric at HPI. I am also excited to work with emerging talented HPI students and plan to integrate cutting-edge research into the design of my course materials. Finally, I will strive to strengthen the diversity and equal opportunity initiatives at HPI, with a goal to take a personal approach that is honest and caring for the well-being of everybody at HPI."

Before joining HPI, Prof. Bajpai was an independent research group leader at the CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security and a senior researcher at the Department of Computer Science at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). His research has won several best paper awards such as the SIGCOMM 2018 best paper award. The TUM Department of Computer Science also awarded him a best teaching award in 2020.

About the Hasso Plattner Institute

The Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) in Potsdam is Germany's university center of excellence for digital engineering (https://hpi.de). With the bachelor's degree program "IT-Systems Engineering," the joint digital engineering faculty of HPI and the University of Potsdam offers a practical engineering-oriented computer science program that is unique throughout  Germany. The program  is currently attended by around 800 students. In five master's degree programs, "IT Systems Engineering", "Digital Health", "Data Engineering", "Cybersecurity", and "Software Systems Engineering", students can  set their own research priorities. In the CHE university rankings, HPI always occupies top positions. The HPI School of Design Thinking, Europe's first innovation school for students following the example of the Stanford d.school, offers 300 places per year for additional studies. HPI currently has 21 professors and over 50  visiting professors, lecturers, and instructors. HPI conducts excellent university research in its IT disciplines, but also in the HPI Research School for doctoral students with its research branches in Cape Town, Irvine, Haifa and Nanjing. HPI teaching and research focus on the fundamentals and applications of large, highly complex, and networked IT systems. In addition, HPI prioritizes the development and research of user-oriented innovations for all areas of life.
