More than 20 years ago, Hasso Plattner had an idea - the co-founder of SAP wanted to enable talented young people in Germany to start a career in the software industry and founded the Hasso Plattner Institute for this purpose. What began in 1999 as an experiment with 77 software engineering students has since become a center of excellence with the bachelor's degree program IT Systems Engineering and the four computer science master's degree programs IT Systems Engineering, Data Engineering, Digital Health, and Cybersecurity.
There is a huge demand for professionals in the IT field, which will continue in the future. We want to introduce our students to computer science not only from a technical and scientific point of view. We also want to show them how fulfilling a profession is, helping to implement new ideas and improving existing processes in many areas of society. With us, our students become digital visionaries who want to create benefits for society as a whole in the future.
Shaping the digital future
The digital future is an essential topic for school students as well. That's why we invite interested young people to get to know the world of computer science while still at school, find out whether this career path could suit them, or deepen their initial knowledge at our HPI Student Academy offerings. Thus, our HPI family starts even before the status of "student." We are always proud that students who once started at our school are still in contact with us as alumni after their studies.
The broad stage of opportunities to be part of HPI before and also after graduation is continuously expanding. In addition to the Design Thinking postgraduate program, there is the E-School for young entrepreneurs and two Research Schools for Ph.D. students with locations in Israel, China, South Africa, and the USA. Many of the more than 1,000 alumni hold leading positions around the world. Some of them have founded their own companies, and it is not uncommon for them to report on their careers here at the institute, passing on knowledge and supporting current students with their experiences.
