According to German law, you must take out a health insurance policy valid for Germany in order to study at a German university. We therefore require that you show proof of health insurance upon registration. 
Students up to the age of 30 have the opportunity to acquire a state health insurance policy. If you are not a member of this group, then you are obliged to take out private health insurance. 

The fundamental difference between private and public health insurance can be explained quite easily: if you have private insurance (private Krankenkasse), when you visit a doctor you will be required to carry the costs yourself for the time being. Afterwards, you submit the doctor's bill to your heath insurer, who then makes a decision as to how much of those costs will be refunded to you (this depends entirely on the contract that you entered into with the private health insurance company). If you have public insurance (gesetzliche Krankenkasse), then the costs of any visits to the doctor are regulated directly between the doctor and the health insurance company.

When making a decision as to which private health insurance company to choose, we advise that you study the various different offers carefully with respect to cost and services provided. The differences can be quite significant. If you are uncertain or have any questions, feel free to visit the University of Potsdam's International Relations Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt).

If any changes are made to your health insurance, we ask that you send the appropriate documents to the International Relations Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt). If you have a time-limited health insurance contract, we also ask that you send a copy of the new contract after each extension to the Internaitonal Relations Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt). If you change to a private health insurer, we ask that you send us the document releasing you from the public health insurance requirement.

If your health insurance provider informs the Internaional Relations Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) at the University of Potsdam that you are behind in making payment, you will receive a restriction notice marked "health insurance not yet handed in" ("Krankenversicherung fehlt"). Your registration will only be complete when your health insurance provider informs the International Relations Office at the University of Potsdam that payment has been settled.
