Social Learning

With their large number of course participants and the opportunity for exchange and discussion in forums, MOOCs are in principal aimed at creating an online learner community similar to the one in classroom courses. But which influence have concepts and technologies that use game-based learning, gamification, collaborative learning, peer assessment etc. on the learning experience and above all on learning success in MOOCs?

Vision Talk on ‘People-Centered Internet’ followed by Q&A

Vinton G. Cerf has served as vice president and chief Internet evangelist for Google since October 2005. In this role, he contributes to global policy development and continued standardization and spread of the Internet. Widely known as one of the "Fathers of the Internet," Cerf is the co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the Internet.


Olivier Crouzet, Dean of Studies

With a scientific background, Olivier Crouzet got a Master degree as an IT engineer. After 2 years as system administrator in the 3rd French Internet service provider, he developed during thirteen years an IT training model, and has been for the last five years involved in 42, the IT school founded by Xavier Niel, French telecom tycoon. While still making evolve the Peer-Learning model of 42, Olivier Crouzet is also promoting evolution in the French education system through various conferences.

Prof. Dr. Dirk Ifenthaler, Professor of Business Education at the University of Mannheim

Dirk Ifenthaler is Professor of Business Education with a focus on technology-based instructional design and UNESCO Deputy Chair of Data Analytics in Higher Education Learning and Teaching at Curtin University, Australia. His research focuses on cognitive psychology, learning research, educational technology and data science. Professor Ifenthaler is Editor-in-Chief of Springer's journal Technology, Knowledge and Learning (www.ifenthaler.info).

Questions for Learner-Centered MOOC Design

How do you plan your first Massive Open Online Course? How do you design an online course in a learner-centered way? In this short workshop, we collect and discuss your open questions about learner-centered MOOC design. Our goal is to develop a learner-centered framework for aiding first-time MOOC designers or instructors taking on a new topic.

lernen.cloud – New Possibilities for Teacher Education

lernen.cloud, HPI's new MOOC platform, is open to all non-profit institutions to offer their own learning content in the form of an online course to help young people and teachers prepare for an increasingly digital world, regardless of time or place. We want to collectively generate initial course ideas in the workshop and play them through in exemplary fashion.

Introduction to Successful Remote Teamwork

This workshop takes experiences from the correspondent MOOC on openHPI.de. It will make you and your team fit for virtual collaboration in geographically distributed contexts. You will learn about the benefits and risks of driving a virtual team culture and how guided remote work drives to success. Furthermore, you will learn how to use intercultural competences as a key factor of interaction and communication.

How to Storify your Online Courses

As a teacher, it can be challenging to create engaging MOOCs. Often, learning materials are of high quality but rarely linked to each other and not adapted to the students’ needs. Narratives can help structuring learning materials and connecting them over the entire course, making them more interesting and easier to understand for the learners. In this workshop, we illustrate how you can apply gameful learning to your courses. You will also get the chance to try out these techniques for your own learning scenarios, enabling you to improve your next MOOC with gameful learning.
