Description
Informationen im Hinblick auf die aktuelle Corona-Krise: Für die Veranstaltung ist ein Präsenzformat geplant. Sollte die Lage eine Umstellung auf ein virtuelles Format erfordern, informieren wir Sie reichtzeitig. (Stand: 28.9.2021)
How are the concepts of good and bad or right and wrong determined? Students will investigate different schools of ethics and moral philosophy, and apply these values to given situations to further develop their English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
In this course, students will learn to not only express an opinion and identify logical fallacies, but also how to develop a persuasive argument to support that opinion, and discover differences between their personal and professional comfort zones in arguing for or against a controversial topic of their choice. Past topics have included surveillance, privacy, universal basic income, drone technology, dress codes, and genetic modification.
Each student will also complete an independent study portfolio of their own creation, selecting from available online study materials to expand their vocabulary, strengthen their grammar knowledge and practice, increase their language comprehension, as well as sharpen their writing skills.
The number of participants in this course is limited to best promote customization, effectively accommodate the needs of the students, and be most efficient in a limited 90-minute weekly course offering.
Examination
Final grade is one-third debate performance, one-third independent study portfolio, and one-third final essay.
