Master Student Lisa Ihde Wins Second Place in ARD/ZDF Award Competition

Master student Lisa Ihde was honored as the second place winner of the ARD/ZDF-sponsored "Women and Media Technology Awards” 2018. The award was presented to Ihde at the kick-off of the IFA or Internationale Funkausstellung (international radio exhibition) in Berlin. Ihde was recognized for her outstanding research results in a thesis addressing current technical issues, as  reflected in her Bachelor’s thesis: “Concepts and Techniques on the Mixed Reality Visualization of Massive 3D Point Clouds.” The sponsorship award, bestowed this year for the 10th time, is endowed with a cash prize of 3,000 euros.

Ihde’s Bachelor’s project was carried out within the research group "Computer Graphics Systems," led by Prof. Jürgen Döllner. Here, Ihde (22) developed a software that allows immersion into complex 3D scans using virtual reality (VR) technology. For the external observer, the representation of VR is mostly limited to the user perspective. In order to connect virtual and real environments with each other and to also make the 3D world visible to the outside public, Lisa Ihde used physical properties of 3D point clouds and in this way created a mixed reality.

Ihde’s special fascination for computer science is founded on the multifaceted nature of the discipline. "Besides that, I like being able to quickly implement ideas through programming and in this way achieve direct effects in real life," she added. Ihde uses her programming skills privately as well, such as to organize her wardrobe via app.

She has already programmed a number of apps, for example to locate glass recycle containers, charity bins for clothes collection or trash receptacles. Lisa Ihde has also co-written a book called "My Own Homepage for Dummies Junior" that was published by Wiley-VCH in 2017. In addition to her studies, Lisa Ihde is engaged as a Gender Equality Officer at the joint digital engineering faculty of HPI and the University of Potsdam. At the end of September 2018, Ihde will be one of six scholarship holders to travel to the US as part of the HPI group attending the world’s largest IT conference for women (Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing).
