The Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) has a research network that includes two HPI Research Schools based in Potsdam and four branches on four continents. The network provides doctoral and postdoctoral fellows with an excellent research environment and close supervision. All fellows are jointly supervised by several professors, not just their primary doctoral supervisor. Researchers meet twice a year for two-day team events and regularly participate in scientific workshops and symposia. In addition, they have the opportunity to discuss their research projects in a weekly colloquium.

Since June 2017, HPI has had a branch office in New York, which, along with Silicon Valley, is one of the fastest growing tech hubs. The branch office is located on the 48th floor of the Hudson Yards building complex in Manhattan - one of the largest new construction projects in the U.S. Together with our partner, SAP Leonardo Innovation Services, we are presenting HPI's fields of work and research there to New York research institutions, universities and companies. All HPI departments can intensify their collaboration with American partners or initiate new projects on site.

With the joint Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health at Mount Sinai (HPIMS), HPI and Mount Sinai University Hospital Health System (MSHS) aim to advance research in the field of digital medicine. Real-time analysis of health data and artificial intelligence will inform patients earlier about potential health risks and enable appropriate preventive measures. The institute is co-chaired by HPI Professor and Head of the HPI Digital Health Center, Erwin Böttinger, and Joel Dudley, PhD, Associate Professor of Genetics and Genomics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Director for Mount Sinai's Institute for Next Generation Healthcare.

SUGAR is a global network that brings together students, universities and companies to promote excellence in design thinking education. In project-based courses, student teams work for two semesters on a problem defined by their corporate partner and jointly develop an innovative product, service, process or business model. In the process, students receive regular feedback from design thinking experts as well as theoretical input on the innovation method.

The Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are collaborating to address global societal challenges with a new joint research program, "Designing for Sustainability." The funded research teams, each composed of at least one faculty member from HPI and MIT, will focus on sustainable innovations in design. HPI and MIT aim to jointly contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations (UN) in 2015.

The 2008-2022 HPI-Stanford Design Thinking Research Program aimed to scientifically explore how and why design thinking innovations work or fail. In the HPDTRP, multidisciplinary teams with diverse backgrounds in the natural sciences, engineering, humanities and design explored the phenomenon of innovation holistically in all its dimensions. They explored the complex interaction between members of multidisciplinary teams faced with the challenge of creating innovations for difficult problems. An important feature is the need for creative collaboration across spatial, temporal, and cultural boundaries. In the context of disciplinary diversity, researchers explored how design thinking meshes with traditional engineering and management approaches, in particular why the structure of successful design teams is fundamentally different from traditional corporate team structures.

The Global Design Thinking Alliance (GDTA) (https://gdta.org/) is a network of institutions that teach, research, and develop the methods and thinking of design thinking. This global network of institutions promotes excellence in design thinking education and research. GDTA's goal is to become a global platform for the exchange, debate, and exploration of best practices in design thinking education, training, and research.  Currently, there are 25 member institutions in 18 countries and on 5 continents.  In addition to the annual Global Design Thinking Conference, the GDTA Spotlight Lecture Series (https://gdta.org/activities-initiatives/gdta-spotlight/), curated by Prof. Uli Weinberg, features monthly presentations by members that are open to the public.
