Description

In this course, we read “Experiences in Visual Thinking” by Stanford prof. emer. Robert McKim, who was a founding father and pioneer of design thinking. McKim specifically contributed to the “be visual” motto in design thinking and advanced highly refined prototyping methodologies. The book read in class discusses how visual approaches can benefit engineering designs ‒ apart from words and mathematics. In great detail it covers issues of seeing, imagining and idea-sketching. In class, student teams present a chapter of the book each, which is then discussed by the whole group. The chapters also include exercises to be tried in class. As for a semester project, students pick ideas from “Experiences in Visual Thinking” they find interesting and translate them into tools to facilitate visual thinking in digital engineering projects.
