Potsdam. The German IPv6 Council has started the third international IPv6 application contest on the new generation internet network. Invited are innovative ideas based on the new internet standard IPv6. The objectives of the contest are the generation of ideas and applications, which help determine how to propagate IPv6 deployment for the next generation internet. Founded in late 2007 in Potsdam, the IPv6 Council will award the best ideas and implementations with cash prizes up to 10,000 euros. The deadline for submissions ends on October 31, 2011. The winners will be awarded in the course of the fourth German IPv6 Summit 2011, which will take place on December 1 and 2. The high level conference will be held in the headline theme „Online on the Road – The new IPv6 standard as the driving force of mobile communication“.

„The competition wants to open new opportunities for developers and other interested parties to gain further experience with the new internet protocol”, explains Prof. Christoph Meinel. The Director of the Hasso Plattner Institute is the owner of the HPI-Chair for Internet Technologies and Systems as well as chairman of the German IPv6 Council. Criteria for the assessment are how and to what extent the contributions promote and popularize IPv6 and how they provide a new internet experience.

There are three major awards: Applications and Implementations, Student and Ideas, and Best Practice. The application is open to companies, teams and individuals of all nationalities. For more information please refer to: www.ipv6council.de/contest2011/vertikal_menu/contest_at_a_glance.html.

Last year’s winner was Gert Döring from Munich. He has developed a software solution that makes the configuration of virtual private networks much easier. Whenever transporting private data from a server to many other client machines over a public network, his new concept reduces administrative server overhead significantly, while the settings on the client machines are made automatically.
