Potsdam. Potsdam computer science professor Patrick Baudisch (Hasso Plattner Institute, HPI) is the first German researcher to be accepted into the Computer-Human Interaction Academy of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The ACM (www.acm.org) is the world’s largest scientific society for computer science. Baudisch will be admitted into the CHI Academy on April 27th at a conference in Paris. He is one of the two people responsible for the contents of the conference program.
Besides the Lifetime Achievement Award, acceptance into the CHI Academy is the highest honor given to experts in the field of human-machine interaction. Among the members of the CHI Academy are such well-known international specialists as Doug Engelbart, the key pioneer in the development of personal computers, and Bill Buxton, one of the leading researchers at Microsoft Research.
“We are delighted that with Patrick Baudisch another researcher who has made substantial contributions to the field of interaction between humans and computers has been admitted into the CHI Academy”, HPI director Prof. Christoph Meinel said. With his work, Baudisch has shaped this sub-discipline of computer science and earned a place among the leading researchers in the field. Saul Greenberg, chairman of the eight-member board of scientists who determine admission to the CHI Academy, and computer science professor at the University of Calgary (Canada), expressed his appreciation to Patrick Baudisch for his work, offering heartfelt congratulations to him on his election to the CHI Academy. The “significant but highly-deserved honor” bestowed on Patrick Baudisch recognizes “the huge, steady and influential contributions he has made to the HCI field over his career.”
Criteria points for election to the CHI Academy are: cumulative contributions to the field, an impact on the field through the development of new research directions and/or innovations, as well as an influence on the scientific work of others.
Profile of Hasso Plattner Institute
The Hasso Plattner Institute for Software Systems Engineering GmbH (HPI) in Potsdam is Germany’s university excellence center for IT Systems Engineering. It is the only university institution in Germany offering bachelor and master programs in “IT Systems Engineering” – a practical and engineering-oriented course of studies in computer science, in which currently 450 students are enrolled.
