Minneapolis/Potsdam. Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) will again be among the attendees at this year’s “Grace Hopper – Celebration of Women in Computing“ the international conference by and for women in computer science, taking place from 2 – 5 October in Minneapolis, Minnesota. For the third time women computer scientists from HPI will be representing their institute at the U.S. conference with a booth.

“Math, computer science, the natural sciences and technology fields are unfortunately often not the first choice for young women as majors. At HPI already during the bachelor studies, practically-oriented projects show how exciting and varied the computer science profession is for women,” said institute director, Prof. Christoph Meinel.  “For the most part, female HPI students - who make up 20% of the student population - complete their studies with excellent results,” said Meinel. This is all the more reason for HPI to encourage young women to pursue a course of studies in computer science.

Women graduates with a degree in the practically-oriented HPI major “IT Software Systems Engineering” have excellent professional opportunities whether in the corporate world, in research or as company founders.

Information about study programs can be found at: www.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/studium/studieninteressierte, with further information about PhD programs at: www.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/research_school/home.

Women computer scientists from HPI will be presenting the following topics at booth 418 in Hall B:

  • openHPI – professional IT knowledge, free to everyone
  • tele-TASK – innovative e-lecturing technology
  • IPv6SSL – network testing for the Internet of the future
  • BlogIntelligence – a fast overview of the blogosphere
  • tele-Board – connecting ideas worldwide
  • tele-Lab – virtual lab for IT security
  • Security Analytics Labs (SAL) – IT vulnerabilities database
